The establishment of the Horticulture Association of Bhutan dates back to 2018. It is a national-level apex organization for horticulture promotion and development in the country. It operates throughout the country by engaging farmer groups and cooperatives in the production, processing and marketing of horticultural produce, aiming at sustainable development of horticulture in Bhutan by raising productivity and total production for sale in the national and export market to increase income opportunities.
HAoB assists in coordinating with groups and cooperatives to build production volumes, access market information, improve visibility, develop market linkages and facilitate access to credits or grants for its members. With the current 500 groups and cooperatives (collectively called producer organizations or POs) under its wing, HAoB meets with all its members annually to discuss challenges and ways forward for horticulture development and promotion. The POs in general are engaged in horticulture production such as vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and flowers for sale mostly in the local or regional markets. Some POs are also engaged in processing horticulture produce, while some POs specialize in logistics and marketing of the produce.
