On March 30, 2023, Mr. Ken Shimizu, the FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal, had a fruitful meeting with Mr. Shamit Chakravarti, the Country Director to Bhutan for the Asian Development Bank (ADB), to discuss areas of mutual interest between the two organizations. The discussion revolved around exploring potential collaboration areas in horticulture and related fields.
Later, Mr. Shimizu met with the President, Board of Directors, and members of the Horticulture Association of Bhutan to further explore collaboration opportunities. The meeting discussed ways to enhance the horticulture sector in Bhutan, including exchanging knowledge and expertise, technical assistance, and support for capacity building programs.
As part of his official duties, Mr. Shimizu is scheduled to meet with senior government officials and agency heads in the country to strengthen cooperation and support for the agriculture sector. He will also observe the activities of the Food Security and Agriculture Productivity Project in Sarpang and Dagana districts, where FAO Bhutan is providing Technical Assistance. The FSAPP project, funded by GAFSP, aims to improve food security and agricultural productivity in five South-West districts in Bhutan, including the horticulture sector.
Overall, Mr. Shimizu’s visit to Bhutan demonstrates FAO’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to enhance the horticulture sector and achieve sustainable agriculture and food security.
